Will Mexican Crime Terrorize Citizens on the U.S. Border?

Kidnapping and Ransom Insurance
The U.S. public used to be in danger of a kidnapping/ransom scenario when overseas. It's getting so violent on our southern U.S. border that now kidnapping and ransom insurance is being offered.
http://www.associatedcontent.comarticle/443500/kidnapping_and_ransom_insurance.html

I recently began to take a closer look at kidnappings in the U.S. along the border with Mexico when approached by a client who was looking to be protected by SEXTON E.P. agents.

The nerve and daring of these Mexican drug gangs is very disturbing. Probably even more disturbing is the fact that Law and Order South of our border could be more appropriately termed; "Lawlessness and Disorder". It would appear that if criminals can not pay off Law Enforcement personnel, they just kill them.

We are very fortunate to have such professional Law Enforcement officers on our side of the border. Still, they can not be everywhere all of the time. It is very disturbing to learn of the many cases of U.S. citizens being grabbed in areas like Southern Texas and Southern California and taken across the border.

If you are wondering why they are being allowed through the border, the answer is painfully simple. Border officials are concentrating on traffic headed North to the U.S. and not vice versa.

Visitors to these areas who may not have considered themselves to be in any danger are encouraged to be very aware of their surroundngs. Businesses operating along the border, or who have reason to travel to Mexico, are advised to exercise extreme caution where their employees/managers/executives are concerned.

Threat Assessments and Risk Management policies should be conducted and re-visited on a regular basis.

Why typos could cost you that job.

Executive Resumes and Career Transition Strategies

Typos in a resume are never good. In this economy, an unchecked resume could easily lead to unemployment.

The above post showing the percentages of employers who would not consider a candidate for employment because of mistakes in their resume is a real eye-opener.

The majority of people who take our Private Investigation and Personal Protection training are looking for jobs. That is why we include resume and cover letter writing as part of our training.

Finding work is tough enough at the best of times, but with thousands more being laid off every day, the competition is really going to heat up. That is why we urge each and every one of our graduates to spend a lot of time working on their resumes.

They say that you only get one chance to make a first impression. Look upon your resume as your representative, your salesperson. That is what a resume is trying to do. It is trying to represent you in the best possible light and to get an employer to consider calling you for an interview.

If your resume contains simple mistakes that could have been easily corrected had you spent a small amount of time reviewing it, you are sending out the message that you are perhaps careless, or not that serious about the position for which you have applied.

Would you hire a person like that?

After being fired by Bad Pitt, Mickey Brett joins list of washed-up bodyguards

Hollywood must produce more washed-up bodyguards than the Florida coastline does driftwood. The difference being, you could probably find some use for the driftwood.

Mickey Brett, former "bodyguard" to the Pitt/Jolie family is about to "write" a tell-all book after getting fired last year. Actually he appears to have hired a "ghost writer". Which is not all that surprising.

It's a pity that these types get assistance in their low-life pursuits. It would be more interesting if they were made to write it themselves. Now that would be funny. It would probably also be very short, contain few words of more than one syllable and would have a lot of pictures - most likely drawn in crayon.

For the life of me I can not understand why celebrities hire so many ill-trained, ill-mannered thugs to "protect" them when they turn out needing protection from the very ones they hired in the first place.

With all of the good companies out there, it should be an easy enough decision. They should be spoiled for choice. One wonders from whom they are receiving advice.

How safe is your Client?

Things were a little wild for The Business these past couple of weeks. A week before the inauguration we had to literally drop everything when we were contacted by the office of an overseas President and First Lady who were in need of protection as they and their entourage were attending privately and as such, were not afforded protection by the Government as it was not a State visit.

Thankfully everything went well and the concerns that many of us had with so many people congregated to celebrate an event that had the world's attention, did not materialize.

One point for the new agents to realize and for those considering a career as an Executive/Close Protection agent, one must always be 100% aware of their surroundings and their client's well-being at all times. This is one of the core values that we continually stress during our High Speed 7 day Training Courses, which are held throughout the year around the U.S.

Our personnel were looking out for clients who had come to be part of the historic inauguration and who had pre-arranged to have tickets for their group and for the detail personnel. As they were making their way to the seated area, our agents noticed that a large group of spectators behind them had broken through one of the security cordons and were pushing forward.

Having seen the loss of life caused by a few dozen WALMART shoppers during a sale's event in New York recently, our sharp-minded agents quickly identified a safe structure where they could go and escape the now growing hoarde of people pushing forward.

The clients were able to continue observing the swearing in of the 44th president in comfort and safety and were so appreciative that a potentially dangerous situation had been avoided that they contacted me and commended those involved for their professionalism and dedication.

When you attend an event as an EP/CP agent, you very well may be surrounded by famous people. Those who are unable to block out the fact that television and movie personalities are all around them or that they are at an historic event, will fail in their mission to protect the client. People like that are in the wrong profession.

Do not be overcome by events. Keep a cool head and expect the unexpected. Today, everyone wants their plane to be flown by Capt. Sullenberger after his amazing Hudson River landing.

I'm proud to say that our agents are known for their "Sullenberger" like protection and dedication. They do me proud.

Is Coffee The New Millenium Drug?

I dropped in to the local Starbucks yesterday on the way to my office to get my morning fix.

I overheard the young barrista telling another customer about how she has wicked headaches on her days off. Her explanation was that the headaches were withdrawl symptoms from not being exposed to the coffee at home like she is at work.

What I found amazing was that the barrista did not even drink coffee but because she was constantly breathing in coffee in the air (second-hand coffee grinds?)and handling it, the caffeine was able to get into her bloodstream.

What she said next completely caught me off-guard. She said that some people even use coffee soap. I figured it was because they must like the smell of coffee so much, but that was not the reason.

It seems that the really hard core caffeine addicts shower with coffee soap in the morning so that the caffeine will get into their open pores and enter the blood stream that much quicker. I thought I was a caffeine addict until I heard that. Now I seem normal.

Or am I? According to research conducted by Johns Hopkins, as little as one cup of coffee a day can produce caffeine addiction. Before you go thinking that such an august institution as Johns Hopkins would hardly spend much time on researching the habits of coffee drinkers - their study was based on 170 years of caffeine withdrawl research.

Is there any wonder there is so much road rage, school violence, workplace violence etc.? The next time that person cuts you off or acts a little crazy on the highway on the way into work, give them a wide berth. They might not have had time for their morning fix.

Maybe coffee soap is not such a bad idea afterall.

Gitmo to close down in '09?

On the face of it, President Obama's executive order to close the terrorist detention camp in Cuba may seem like he is not that tough on terrorism. There are even those who are heralding this as the end of the War on Terror.

It is too early to jump to conclusions, however. According to Ben Feller, the Associated Press writer, the administration is also planning a study of more aggressive interrogation methods that could be added to the Army Field Manual.

It seems that the President is looking to "play by the book" and in this case, if the book needs to be hardened, it sounds as if that is what will happen.

Another sign that he may not be as soft on terrorism as some would think are the recent air strikes in Pakistan. These came during his first 48 hours in office. Looks like he has hit the ground running.

How to catch a Liar

Last night, Fox Channel 5 aired the new series; "Lie to Me", with Tim Roth.

I was delighted to see such a series. I am one of the few investigators who practice Integrity Interviews. Many people have some kind of idea what it is, but do not seem to understand it that well.

I am hoping that many will watch this show and realize how investigators like me focus on people's body movements to determine when they are being truthful or deceitful.

Certain clients like property management companies can not afford to hire employees who can not be trusted as they have access to people's homes on a daily basis. Integrity Interviewing is a fantastic way to shortlist candidates or to even investigate an incident where there are multiple suspects.

Beware though if you intend to try out this form of questioning yourself. It takes many years and hundreds of interviews to be able to detect the faintest of facial expressions that can give the investigator a glimpse into the real character of a person.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back to Tiananmen...

These days Shanghai may appear to be a cross between New York City and London, but old habits still die hard.

News Channels in the U.S. today carried the story of President Obama's Inaugural speech being censored in China. The reason? He mentioned communism in China.

I'm sure anybody who visits China these days will be as surprised as I was when I went on a business trip there two years ago. The hustle and bustle in cities such as Shanghai and Beijing would lead you to believe that you were in a capitalist country.

As a matter of fact, I had to keep reminding myself that it was still a communist country. Twenty years after the Tiananmen Square massacre and the only problem I encountered when walking around the infamous square was an over zealous stamp seller.

I did actually experience censorship first hand when watching (or trying to watch) a CNN televised report of an election in Hong Kong. Apparently, some people were protesting, albeit peacefully, but that was enough for the Government to black out the report. It was easy to see what happened as the Chinese television station actually cut back to the report only to find CNN still talking about it, so they blacked it out again!

If you are wondering what security implications this could have for a tourist, just look at the case of the Australian writer, Harry Nicolaides, who recently received a three year jail sentence in Thailand for writing a story about a Royal family member. The really sad thing was that not only was it a work of fiction but he only sold 7 books.

You have to be extremely careful about what you say and who you say it to overseas. Remember, not every country has the same freedom of speech rights that people in this country have.

If you thought the "Popemobile" was something, wait until you see the "Obamobile"

If President Obama is forced to give up his Blackberry, at least his new Cadillac is a cool consolation prize.

The new "Obamobile" is said to be able to withstand Rocket and chemical attacks. He also gets to take it all over the world on his travels.

I was listening to a live broadcast of the Inauguration and the announcers were discussing the wonder car. They figured it would get 3 or 4 miles to the gallon. Shame they didn't make it a Hybrid when they were at it as there are bound to be those who will complain about the poor mileage figures.

Not that he will ever travel that far in it. When the Government sells that in a few years, it will probably only have a couple of thousand miles on it. It will be one of those "driven by a little old lady to church" specials. Only with this one, you could ride to church safe knowing that your car could withstand Rocket and chemical attacks!

How to Survive a Plane Crash

Understandably, everyone is talking about the amazing Hudson River landing by United Airlines Pilot, Capt. Sullenberger. "The Huffington Post" describes steps to take to increase your odds of surviving a plane crash.

Some of these points I had heard before, such as sitting as close to an exit as possible. Those who are within 5 rows of an exit have the best chance of survival.

One very interesting statistic that I had not heard before, is that according to the U.S. Government, 95.7% of all people involved in an airline accident make it out alive. Those are great odds. Obviously, having Capt. Sullenberger as your Pilot increases your chances of survival that much more.

Another piece of information I found interesting is the fact that experts believe as many as 30% of airline accident deaths could be prevented if passengers knew what to do when a crash was imminent.

A good point to remember is that the first 3 minutes and the last 8 minutes of every flight are the most important. We have alwys heard that the most dangerous times during a flight are at take-off and landing.

Next time you are thinking of kicking off your shoes and putting on your ear phones to listen to your favorite music as the plane is preparing to take-off - STOP. Being fully aware of your surroundings and ready to respond to any emergency could very well save your life.

Civilian Security Contractor Awarded Medal for Bravery

This is a great story for the private security industry as a whole, especially with all of the negative stories going around about certain companies and operators working in Iraq.

One wonders why there have not been more medals awarded as I am sure security contractors in Iraq and Afghanistan have helped to save lives on a daily basis. Would any HE operators care to shed some light or share examples of heroic acts that they have experienced first hand?

Crime to Rise

We've said it before on this forum. This story from PInow.com talks about an increase in shoplifting from retail establishments.

The U.S. is not alone in this projected crime wave. World economies are suffering and unfortunately people will turn to crime more quickly.

While this may be something "positive" for security companies who have to hire more staff to thwart the thieves, it is bad for the economy on the whole as heavier losses by the Retail Industry will force them to push prices even higher.

How much should you tip a valet for your...Bike?

You just know Washington D.C. is going to be congested beyond imagination for the inauguration when they are offering to valet park your BIKE!

Bike Valet Parking Available
In DC on Inauguration Day
Free Service Offered at 2 Locations Near Mall

(Washington, D.C.) If you’re heading downtown for the Inauguration of President-Elect Barack Obama, there is a way to avoid congested traffic and crowded Metro trains. With the support of the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) will provide free valet bike parking services at two locations in the District on January 20, 2009. The local non-profit bike safety and advocacy organization says it is prepared to park more than 2,000 bicycles.
“We think WABA is providing a great service,” said Jim Sebastian, DDOT’s Bicycle Program Manager. “With the crowds that are expected, biking may be the easiest way to get to the Inauguration and the bike valet eliminates the hassle of trying to find parking.”

The bike valets will be located on the south side of the Jefferson Memorial and on 16th Street, NW, between I and K Streets. Both sites are within walking distance of the Inaugural festivities and will be open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. A limited number of commemorative valet claim checks and spoke cards will be offered to cyclists who use the valets.

WABA says the service will operate like a car valet. “You simply ride up to the valet, a volunteer will attach one half of a claim ticket to your bike and hand you the other half,” said Henry Mesias, the project manager at WABA. “The volunteer will then park the bike in a safe enclosure while you head off to enjoy the Inauguration. When you want to leave, you show us your half of the claim check and we get you your bike and you ride off. It’s quite simple.”

The sidewalks on all bridges over the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers will be open to bicyclists and pedestrians, and the Memorial Bridge will be dedicated to bicyclists and pedestrians. Cyclists coming from Arlington, Alexandria, Southeast and Southwest DC can use the valet station at the Jefferson Memorial, while riders from the north can use the station at 16th and K Streets, NW.

Volunteers will help staff the valet parking and the Dero Bike Rack Company of Minnesota will supply the specially designed, American-made ‘event racks’ free of charge. In the event of extreme weather, the valets will be closed, but the unattended bike parking racks will still be available for use.

For more information, including tips on the safest routes to the bike valet locations, please visit WABA’s special Inaugural web page at www.waba.org/events/inauguralbikevalet.php.

Job Vacancies in Somalia; 5 Pirates Wanted. Knowledge of Swimming a Bonus.

I can think of no better example of the old phrase; "Live by the sword, die by the sword"....or in this case; "live as a non-swimming pirate, die as a non-swimming pirate".
Five of the eight pirates who who took over the Saudi oil tanker drowned with their ransom money after their speed boat capsized during their "get-away".

Wouldn't you think that one of the main job requirements for the position of "pirate" would be the ability to swim? O.K., so they have the grimmacing look down and obviously they know how to slither up the side of a vessel....but what about the escape plan guys?

Maybe they could have also checked the weather forecast? Afterall, you sit around for weeks on end negotiating the ransom and then when you finally reach a decision, you make them drop the money off during a storm? Who's coaching these guys - Richard Simmons?

At least they had the sense to have the money dropped in a waterproof case. As an entrpreneur, I'm thinking right there is an opportunity for a local salvage operation, but I am sure they won't think of it.

Another idea...maybe a Somali television station should come up with a reality show...."Somalia's dumbest criminals" seems appropriate.

Kidnap Expert Becomes Kidnap Victim

In last Thursday's New York Times, Marc Lacey wrote about an interesting incident which took place in Mexico recently.

Back on Dec. 10, an American, Mr. Felix Batista was abducted outside of El Meson restaurant in Saltilo, Mexico. What makes this particular kidnapping remarkable is the fact that the victim was himself, a security consultant specializing in resolving kidnappings.

There have been many kidnappings at popular restaurants in recent times. If a person frequents a restaurant regularly, it is only a matter of waiting until they return. Even the waiting/surveillance can be easily outsourced for a few dollars.

It is ironic that prior to being kidnapped, Mr. Batista had addressed a gathering of prominent entrepreneurs on steps to take to avoid being kidnapped. One wonders if this was a case of; "do as I say, not as I do", or were other factors involved?

Mr. Batista was the third anti-kidnapping expert to have been abducted in Coahuila State. During his security seminar down there he informed the attendees that kidnappers generally avoided foreigners. Perhaps he became careless thinking he himself was safe as a foreigner.

Be careful about dropping your guard, especially in high-threat areas like Mexico. Do not become overly confident or complacent. Never think that it "couldn't happen to me", because you may just be the next victim.

Roland Burris - Guilty by Association?

Last month, Gov. Blagojevich of Illinois was arrested on corruption charges. This month he is being impeached. Is he the type of person you would want endorsing you for a position?

Apparently Roland Burris believes he is. Then again Mr. Burris appears to be gambling on the fact that he will get in just under the wire on this one. Another would-be Senator already turned down Blagojevich's offer.

It is quite likely that Mr. Burris was not involved in any dealings with the troubled Gov. Most people appear to speak very highly of him amd say that he is a good man. That still will not stop his name and appointment from being tainted as he has been selected by a man facing alleged corruption and impeachment problems.

As a security instructor, I regularly bring these points up for discussion. It is a fact of life that if you associate with a criminal, you will be viewed as a criminal even if you are as honest as the day is long.

I once had a protective assignment running for a client at four different locations 24/7. It took a lot of manpower and a while to find out which personalities fitted in where. One guy thought he was in charge when he wasn't and eventually I had to spell it out for him that he had to follow the rules like everyone else.

He wasn't able to take being told what to do so he quit. I was able to handle one troublesome person quitting, that was no bother. What happened next though threatened my whole operation.

I discovered through the grapevine (the world of Executive Protection is quite small, even on a Global scale) that he had gone to work for a convicted criminal. That is professional suicide as no decent, self respecting company would ever hire someone like that as he couldn't possibly trusted.

The criminal's new employee then called the guys on my big detail a few days after landing his new job. He advised them that they could make $50 per day more if they left my assignment and went to work for the criminal. A couple of thm approached and said they were thinking of doing it as it meant an extra couple hundred dollars over the course of a week.

I told them that I could not stop them, but if they did go and work for the criminal and my ex-employee that they would never be allowed to work for me again as their professional reputations would be tainted beyond repair. Thankfully they took heed and stayed. The ex-employee was fired by the criminal and has been an outcast in private security in Virginia and the surrounding areas ever since.

Reputations are fragile and while they can be nurtured to grow strong, they can very easily be damaged beyond recognition. Treat yours well as it is the only one you have.

Rules for a Gunfight

A Marine friend serving overseas sent this to us. If you earn a living depending on a gun, this makes great reading....

RULES FOR A GUNFIGHT

1. Forget about knives, bats and fists. Bring a gun. Preferably, bring at least two guns. Bring all of your friends who have guns. Bring four times the ammunition you think you could ever need.
2. Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Ammunition is cheap - life is expensive. If you shoot inside, buckshot is your friend. A new wall is cheap - funerals are expensive
3. Only hits count. The only thing worse than a miss is a slow miss.
4. If your shooting stance is good, you're probably not moving fast enough or using cover correctly.
5. Move away from your attacker and go to cover. Distance is your friend. (Bulletproof cover and diagonal or lateral movement are preferred.)
6. If you can choose what to bring to a gunfight, bring a semi or full-automatic long gun and a friend with a long gun.
7. In ten years nobody will remember the details of caliber, stance, or tactics. They will only remember who lived.
8. If you are not shooting, you should be communicating, reloading, and running. Yell "Fire!" Why "Fire"? Cops will come with the Fire Department, sirens often scare off the bad guys, or at least cause then to lose concentration and will... and who is going to summon help if you yell "Intruder," "Glock" or "Winchester?"
9. Accuracy is relative: most combat shooting standards will be more dependent on "pucker factor" than the inherent accuracy of the gun.
10. Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty.
11. Always cheat, always win. The only unfair fight is the one you lose.
12. Have a plan.
13. Have a back-up plan, because the first one won't work. "No battle plan ever survives 10 seconds past first contact with an enemy."
14. Use cover or concealment as much as possible, but remember, sheetrock walls and the like stop nothing but your pulse when bullets tear through them.
15. Flank your adversary when possible. Protect yours.
16. Don't drop your guard.
17. Always tactical load and threat scan 360 degrees. Practice reloading one-handed and off-hand shooting. That's how you live if hit in your "good" side.
18. Watch their hands. Hands kill. Smiles, frowns and other facial expressions don't. (In God we trust. Everyone else keep your hands where I can see them.)
19. Decide NOW to always be aggressive ENOUGH, quickly ENOUGH.
20. The faster you finish the fight, the less shot you will get.
21. Be polite. Be professional. But, have a plan to kill everyone you meet if necessary, because they may want to kill you.
22. Be courteous to everyone, overly friendly to no one.
23. Your number one option for personal security is a lifelong commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation.
24. Do not attend a gunfight with a handgun, the caliber of which does not start with anything smaller than "4".
25. Use a gun that works EVERY TIME. "All skill is in vain when an Angel blows the powder from the flintlock of your musket." At a practice session, throw your gun into the mud, then make sure it still works. You can clean it later.
26. Practice shooting in the dark, with someone shouting at you, when out of breath, etc.
27. Regardless of whether justified of not, you will feel sad about killing another human being. It is better to be sad than to be room temperature.
28. The only thing you EVER say afterward is, "He said he was going to kill me. I believed him. I'm sorry, Officer, but I'm very upset now. I can't say anything more. Please speak with my attorney."

Finally, Drill Sergeant Frick's Rules For Un-armed Combat;

29. Never be unarmed.

30. If you have your hands, your feet, your mind and your Spirit as an American Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Marine or Coastie, you are never unarmed.

Blackwater shooter to be charged with Murder of Iraqi Vice President's Bodyguard.

According to the Seattle Times, the former Blackwater employee who allegedly shot and killed the bodyguard of the Vice President of Iraq in 2006 will finally be brought to Justice.

In a story previously discussed in this blog, Andrew Moonen of Seattle was said to be drunk when he shot and killed the Iraqi bodyguard at a checkpoint inside the safety of the Green Zone during the Christmas of '06.

Moonen claimed that the bodyguard shot first, but witnesses did not hear any shots other than the three which came from Moonen's weapon and were discharged into the victim's chest.

Blackwater's response was to hustle him out of Iraq the following day and pay $20,000 to the victim's family. Moonen's lawyer, Stewart Riley has confirmed that his client has received a letter from the U.S. Attorney's office outlining their intent to charge the ex-Blackwater employee.

This latest action probably comes too late for the victim's family to take much comfort from it, but hopefully it will send out a message, albeit belated, that the United States Government does not harbour murderers, even if some employers would rather cover up a crime.

It is ironic that Moonen was an armorer for Blackwater. Presumably his lawyer will not try to blame the shooting on an "accidental discharge" when Moonen could easily be classed as a firearms "expert".

As one of our instructors is fond of saying; "there is no such thing as an "accidental" discharge. The correct terminology is; a negligent discharge".

India seeks outside help with Terrorists

This story from the Times of India regarding working with foreign security advisors was to be expected.

Many countries seek the assistance from outside companies who have more expertise in a certain field. We endorse India's decision to get a grip on the situation to try and avoid trajedies like this in the future.

We ourselves have proposed to go over to India to teach our Executive Protection course to one of the largest security companies in India. It would seem that Executive Protection, especially for foreigners will be a growing industry with all of the problems that India faces.

Unfortunately, our offer was not accepted as the owner of this company believed he could not afford our professional training program. This is always a difficult concept for a security consultant to grasp - how people can view security as unaffordable. When it comes from a security business owner, it is all that much more perplexing.

However, it is not in our nature to give up easily. We will continue to keep negotiations open and hopefully one day soon we will be able to make an annoucement of a joint venture right here on The Bullet Proof Blog.

Workplace Violence is more of a concern with companies than Terrorism

We've said it here before - violence in the workplace - often resulting in death, is one of the main concerns facing U.S. businesses every year.

While terrorism is something that is never too far from our minds these days, most companies are far more likely to experience a workplace violence incident than a terrorist attack.

This is further reinforced by an article in which a senior accounts manager for a defense and Security Solutions company states that W.P.V. concerns far outweigh and is more prevalent than threats of terrorism.

Another interesting point raised is that relating to background checks. While the majority of companies do conduct background checks (around 65%, which means that many still do not), less than 5% conduct any periodic check once the employee has been hired.

If no further checking is hardly ever carried out, that means that 95% of companies are leaving it up to the employee to tell them when they have been arrested or served with a restraining order. I am hoping that when business owners see this in print, they will realize how bad that sounds.

How many spouses/significant others could be expected to come into work on Monday morning and inform the HR Dept., that they spent the weekend in jail for beating their mate? Or that they have been charged with possessing narcotics with the intent to distribute?

About 2 years ago we were called in by a Govt. contractor to prevent workplace violence from occurring when they fired an employee who had been charged by the Police for operating a Meth Lab on his off-hours. Thankfully a corporate investigator discovered the case and when they checked into the employee more fully, also discovered that he had been stealing company supplies and selling them on E-Bay.

It's wise to think about terrorism, but don't forget to look for problems that may be lurking right under your nose.
